FLAG DAY – JUNE 14, 2010

A day, to be remembered, at least in Louisville, Ky.

Thanks to a small select group of men, working through the Missing In America Project, headed up by Dale Lemond, along with Walt Oster, Jack Flowers; a former Navy Seal and Chet Neevy; a Vietnam veteran, thirty plus veterans and dependents will get their just remembrances and burial honors.

Walt Oster: the newly appointed Commander of the 3rd District of the DAV, a past police officer of the City of Louisville, headed up the research and investigation group of dedicated individuals. They have managed to discover and recover the abandoned cremation remains of 30 plus veterans and several dependants. The remains were discovered in a warehouse owned by the University of Louisville, where they had laid for about fifteen (15) years, unidentified. A court order was obtained and the remains were removed by and transported to the Louisville Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Dixie Highway, in Shively, KY. There they were sorted and placed in appropriate containers and are on view to the public.

A voluntary Honor Guard will stand by on Sunday, June 13th, from 2:00 pm till 6:00 pm and anyone is welcome to stand, in 10 minute increments, to honor these too-long neglected Veterans. A formal “Changing of the Guard” takes place at approximately 6:00 pm.

On Monday morning, starting at 9:00 am, a ceremony will begin, followed by a funereal precession comprised of Active and inactive Military Personnel, Police and Fire Departments and Veterans Organizations, High School ROTC Units and other units and groups, too numerous to mention, including as many as 200 motorcycle rider from all over the country. The precession will exit the cemetery shortly after 10:00 am and proceed down Dixie Highway to the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery in Radcliff, KY which is located just south of Fort Knox, Ky.

The public is invited to attend either Sunday, or Monday, and is welcome to join the procession to Radcliff.
